  • Puncture on the Spot!

    Hey guys from Bangalore,

I just got a call from a company called PunctureonSpot. Has anyone tried their service?

    PunctureOnSpot.com | Home Page

I don't know whether their plans are reasonable, service is reasonable, or if they are a ripoff.... but has anyone had any experience with them?

        • Based on what you want the most out of a tyre, I recommend you choose from the Dunlop Monster or the Michelin M45. The Zapper Q does not inspire confidence in the wet.

          • Decode Tyre Sizes....

            Hi...

Found a number of threads on tyres. Which is meant for what, which bike, etc. However, i could not find any information on the various tyre sizes. How do we decode the tyre sizes. Some are 3.00-18, 100-90, 90-90. what do these numbers mean? How do I differentiate between them?

Would be great full if some light could be thrown on this...

I faintly remember reading a post regarding 'decoding' the tyre specifications somewhere in this thread, although I could not find it. May be someone can throw some light on this, yet again.

              • Thanks Aryan. That was super quick...

I too just went thru the thread and found a lot of awesome info on tyres, but no information as to what 100 or 90 in a 100-90 Tyre means, or for that matter, how is a 100-90 different from a 3.00-18.

sorry to say, but i am clueless regarding these numbers...

                • Those magical numbers on the tyre sidewall
Ok, so you may see numbers on the side of the tyre similar to 170/60ZR-17
                  • 170 is the width of the tyre in millimetres
                  • 60 is percentage height of the side wall to the tyre width. So in this case, 60%
                  • 17 is the rim size the tyre is designed to fit. In this case, a 17 inch rim.
                  • R stands for radial (explained later)
                  • Z marks the maximum continuous speed rating for the tyre. In this example, Z indicates speeds in excess of 149mph (just read Z to mean very fast or 12 points and a ban).
                  Here's the source.

                      • Tyre Nomenclature explanation

                        3.00 18 R 18 Nomencalture 1

                        120/70 17 Nomenclature 2

3.00 Refers to 3 inches. This is the tyre width. Just like 120 in the other nomenclature.

In this nomenclature, sidewall height is always 100% of the Tyre width. So in this case Sidewall height is 100% of 3 inches or simply 3 inches. This is similar to 70 in the other nomenclature.

18 ofcourse is the rim size.

                        • How to convert from 1 Nomenclature to another

                          3.00 18

Tyre width 3 Inches, Sidewall height 100% = 3 inches, Rim size 18 inch.

                          1 inch = 25.4 mm

                          Therefore

                          25.4 X 3 / 25.4 X 3 18

                          76.2/76.2 18

                          Rounded off 75/75 18.

                          *************************

Convert 100/90 18 to other nomenclature

Since the sidewall height is 90 % in this size and it is considered 100 % in other nomenclature, there cannot be a conversion, but tyre size would be close to

3.93 Inches tyre width/ 3.53 Inches Sidewall height

                          ( 1mm = .0393 inches )
