Hye!
Is there much difference between the R15 V2 stock front tyre(MRF Zapper FY) and the FZ stock front(MRF Zapper FX) apart from the size(90 and 100 respectively) Do they have similar grip levels?

I do not have experience about zapper fx but what I saw at the showroom in noida, most of the FZ and fazer users were installing zapper FY1 as front. most said that it has slight better grip in wet condition.

That means they were downsizing their front from 100 to 90! Is that advisable?

And Downsizing their Rear from 140 to 130 as well, by using R15 v2 tire setup. I don't know whether it would be better or not.. a few were also going for 150 at rear. I understand that most of the people at showroom are not well informed, even didn't knew the tire size, but were asking for R15 tires!!

• Re: Tyres

I have changed both my tyres in my Karizma ZMR, wanna share my thoughts with my fellow xbhp mates. I was really tired of the pathetic grip of the MRF stock tyres in my motorcycle. As any ZMR rider knows, the rear tyre gives away too easily. I have driven it around 11000 Km in the last 3.5 years, and i was thinking of changing the tyres since the day of purchase. 1 month back i changed the front stock tyre to Michellin Sirac street, same size as the stock. Immediate improvement in grip and braking, with no change in weight or steering dyanamics. The stock tyre was neutral in corners, but the Sirac street is much more comfortable while on corners. As soon as i tilt the motorcycle, the front screams- tilt more, tilt more! And now i can just squeeze the front disc brakes with all my power, provided i keep the handle arrow straight. Its tread design is excellent for on road as well as off road driving. Although it a soft rubber compound and will not last as long as the stock, i am extremely happy with the grip, handling and braking.

Last week i decided to change the rear tyre too. Read all about ZMR and rear tyre combinations, thanks to my fellow xbhp members. Finally i decided to get Pirelli Sport Demon 110\80\18, for both grip as well as looks! But i enquired all the tyre sellers in my city, all keep the 120 version of sport demon, not the 110. And though the seller told me that there is negligible difference in price and weight between 110 and 120, i know that he was just trying to sell what he had in stock. I am planning a 450 km trip in the next week, and i wanted a new rear tyre immediately. So i agreed and bought the pirelli sport demon 120\80\18. It is not as heavy as MRF zapper Q, but not as light as the stock mrf zapper either. Its weight is quite less than the other 120 wide options (mrf, michellin, ceat etc). Bought it for Rs.3600 from the biggest tyre showroom in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

I had decided to remove the chain cover entirely, as i ride solo always. I have promised myself to take care of the chain with washing and oiling at least every month. Now the rear is slightly heavy, just a negligible difference as Karizma has excellent low end torque. But i could easily accelerate slowly from 1500 rpm in any gear with the stock gear (i know driving at such low rpm is not recommended!). Now i can't do it without getting knocking from the engine. Other than that i can ride comfortably in any gear without any acceleration loss. In fact i find the acceleration to be more linear and exciting with the pirelli (maybe its cuz my mind doesn't expect such acceleration after installing heavier tyre and when it does accelerate, my mind is fooled in thinking it to be more than before!). Loss in mileage is around 4-5 kmpl in city driving and 2-3 on the highway, but i am not much of a mileage caring guy, although i always drive in a relaxed manner so as to not waste fuel by unnecessarily accelerating. I drive it more like a bullet, mostly at low rpms with gear changes at around 2500 - 3000 rpms!

The braking is perfect for me now, i slam both the brakes with all my power without worrying about wheel locks! (Of course the braking force is much higher in front than in rear). The rear just refuses to leave the road. I drive like a maniac on empty straights sometimes (not my riding style, but just do it for testing the new rear tyre), swaying and tilting crazily, and the rear tyre slips a little and gets back on track! I immediately get the feeling (while in a highly tilted position) that the rear end was just skidding away and has gained grip again! Although the life of this tyre is only 20000-25000 Kms, i am okay with it. I don't like the idea of getting a durable hard rubber compound tyre so that it can last more than 40000 kms but doesn't provide any grid or stability at all. That is the reason i avoided MRF Zapper Q, also it was way heavier than all the other tyres i saw.

I have an elephant(121KG) for a cousin, my maternal uncle's son. He rides pillion with me on rare occasions, and i used to rev a little more than usual with him (gear change at around 3500 rpms) when i had the stock tyre. Today he sat behind me again, and the acceleration loss was huge! I had to change gears at above 4500 rpms!

P.S. I think i have the best combination of front and rear tyres for a karizma. If anyone else has got the same satisfactory results from any other brand/model (but same size as mine, stock 80 in front and 120 in rear) please post it here.

Hye guys.

So I am in a dilemma of sorts.
I have several choices to change the tyres of my CBR150R. Last I posted here I was looking for PSD's, but I haven't been able to find them. So my choices are -
1) Front- MRF Zapper FY, 100/70/17. This is the FZ front tyre. Rear- MRF Revz S 130/70/17.
These are stock sizes for my bike, so that's a good thing. What I am not sure about is that while the rear tyre is very grippy, and known to be really good, I don't really know how good the front tyre is. On my current TVS tyres I have had issues with the front washing out, so am apprehensive. This combo is the cheapest option.
2) Front- Michelin Pilot Street Radials 110/70/17. Rear- Michelin Pilot Street Radials 130or140/70/17.
These are supposed to be really good tyres, I kinda want to get them. Here my query is that since I will be upsizing the front, should I upsize the rear also? These tyres are available in Manglore, so that's good for me.
3) Front- Pirelli Sport Demons 100/70/17. Rear- Pirelli Sport Demons 130/70/17.
If possible to source these, I think they would be best.

What do you guys think? AV8TOR (tagging you as you would definitely be able to help out hehe)

1] MRF - FZ's stock front is 100/80-17 Zapper FX and not 100/70-17 Zapper FY
this will be a good setup, Zapper FX is good in grip as well.
2] Michelin - No first hand experience with these tyres yet but in my opinion, I would stick to the stock size atleast for the front tyre
3] PSD's - are good. Only difference i find in MRF and PSDs is that MRFs warm up quick providing good grip, and wet grip is better than PSD - thats just my personal opinion. Then there's the usual sourcing problem, 130's are available but I am not aware of 100/70-17 in PSDs !

PS: just out of curiosity, why aren't you sticking to the stock? Isn't Zapper Q good enough ?

My bad about the tyre! I remembered it that way.

The stocks in my bike aren't the MRF's, but TVS tyres. For all purposes though, the CBR's that I rode with the stock MRF's showed pretty similar grip levels. Both tyres didn't perform great under braking. While they are decent tyres for the road, in the ghats, they are simply not good enough. It's very easy to reach the limits on them, and you can sense that the bike has a lot more to give if there were better tyres on. And the less said about the wet performance the better.

I have read about the Pirellis offering 100's but again, as I haven't been able to source any, I don't know for sure. The MRF's do seem to be my best bet for now, and are available at my local dealer.

Is there any reason why you suggest not to upsize the front? The only downside I can see is that the bike will turn in slower.

- Zapper Q, not good in grip? That's a rare opinion. Though, it's totally subjective! For me Mrfs are the best bet, even before PSD's.
- Well, about upsizing or downsizing, I am simply not inclined towards doing it, since the R&D departments have spent considerable amount of time and money, to make a product what it is! For me doesn't really make sense to change the specifications
- For some reason my database doesn't show Pirelli tyre in 100s, the smallest being 110-70-17

Oh. So unless I upsize, both Pirellis and Michelins are off the table. This does make it much simpler though haha! MRF's it is. Will try and get these tyres as soon as possible. It is a rather stupid hassle though. The MRF dealer here doesn't have a paddock stand, so will have to go to the Honda SVC, get both tyres removed, then head to the MRF dealer get them changed and back. Easily gonna take 2-3 hours this.

Thanks a lot though!

One setup I can suggest is that of R15 V2.
90/80 - 17 front (Zapper FY1) & 130/70 - 17 rear (Revz S).

Both are soft compound tyres. Ride a R15 V2 to get a feel for grip of tyres. You'll be downsizing front (keeping rear stock) but upside is that it is by far the best combo available from MRF lineup.

I have experienced Apache RTR 180s setup downsized to R15 V1's tyres (which too were as good as the V2 setup now) and the difference is very much palpable and positive.

I don't think stock CBR150R's sporting MRF tyres are soft compound versions but Zapper FQ front and Zapper Q rear which are relatively designed for longer life than outright grip.

Hope it helps!

Is there much difference between the FZ front and R15 V2 front apart from the size? The FZ is designated as Zapper FX and the R15 as Zapper FY. I'm guessing the compound is the same but just a slight difference in tread?
