      • Which Front tyre for Splendor Plus?

Hello xbhpians, i am a newbie here. Hope i would get good advices here.

        Here is my story...
My father bought a Hero honda Splendor plus in year 2004. Since then, he was using it until he gave it to me in 2008 june because of back pain caused to him due to heavy riding on his previous bike Rajdoot. I was using Discover 125cc spoke versions bought in 2006 feb. Since the Discover's mileage was becoming so low even around 25kmpl due to unknown reasons, i sold it in 2008 feb and took over splendor. My father used to ride it rarely after that.

In 2008 june he met with an accident and in 2008 oct i met with an accident in the splendor. Both were due to skidding of bike. So i went to Herohonda authorized service center near my home where we usually give the bike for service and asked him. He asked me to change the rear tyre as the tyre threads were gone. So i asked him to fit a little thicker tyre i.e. the next size (3x18). He said, its not good for the bike and he wont do that. but said he will put MRF with good thick threaded tyre of size 2.75x18. So i accepted it and asked him to change.

Next day i went there and noticed that, he had changed the tyre, but not MRF but a dunlop zebra y-plus. I demanded a explanation, and he said the dunlop is also a good one. I saw the thread of the dunlop tyre to be thicker than my previous tyre and was little satisfied and so i paid for it and rode bake home! To be frank, i did't know much details of tyre. so i did not inspect the tyre and started continuing.

From 2008 till 2009 the tyre's performance was good but after 2009 aprl i again started experiencing heavy wobbling and skidding until in 2010 oct as i once again met with an accident at the speed of 30kmph reasoned due to skidding. My foot got injured severely and i had to lose my job due to that.

After healing, i took the bike to the same Service center and asking him, y my bike gets skidded at low speeds and y i get heavy wobbling. He inspected and said, i had fitted a wrong tyre in the rear. It should be 2.75x18 48p but i had fitted 2.75x18 42p (which is the size of front tyre). I got angry and replied that i had change the tyre at the same shop here only but the mechnic and manager denied. I went home and got the bill of the tyre and showed to them. They got shocked and said "sir, i guess it might be the mistake of the old mechanics and working and now here we all here are new workers and we dont know about this incident". The usual thing to escape..

From then, i decided not to go with them and searched on Internet and at last bought a Michelin sirac 3x18 tyre for rear and fitted it. Now the removed tire is Dunlop zebra y-plus 2.75x18 42p (the cheated one).

Actually, From the date of purchase of the bike, i have changed the rear tyre 2 times and this sirac is the 3rd one BUT never changed the front tyre. The current front tyre is Dunlop maxi-rib 2.75x18 42p. Its condition is ok, not worn off yet but has cracks.

        My question is-
Is it advisable to change my front from Dunlop maxi-rib to Dunlop zebra y-plus both of same size? Wat about the grip and stable riding?
Many mechanics say its not advisable due to thread diffrence. Even here at xbhp, one thread said, its good to change for disc bike but not advised for drum (mine is drum braked bike). But the dunlop website-

        Falcon Tyres Ltd
        Falcon Tyres Ltd
        Falcon Tyres Ltd

As per above, it says, both these are front tyres use for HH splendor. Infact Zebra is has more features and benefits than maxi-rib. But the mechanics confuse me.
I am totally confused.. I am in a hurry too, because one of my brother's friend have asked for a tyre which is unused.
Wat should i do? Pls help.. Pls Advise..

        Regards,
        Rajiv

        • Which would be the Best safer front tyre for my Hero Honda splender+ ?

Is it advisable to change my front tyre from current Dunlop maxi-rib to Dunlop zebra y-plus(which i recently replaced from rear tyre after fitting michellin. Zebra is in good condition but is currently not in use and is in garage) both of 2.75x18 42p? Wat about the grip and stable riding?
(Maxi rib fitted in my bike is in use for 7 years, ok condition and has cracks. Zebra is only 3 yrs old, good condition both in thread and rubber).

Many mechanics say its not advisable to Zebra tyre due to Different thread and will not give stable riding with splendor. Even here at xbhp, one of the threads related to Pulsar 150 front tyre said, "its good to change for disc bike but not advised for drum" (mine is drum braked bike). But wat the dunlop website says is,

          Falcon Tyres Ltd
          Falcon Tyres Ltd
          Falcon Tyres Ltd

both these are front tyres use for HH splendor. Infact Zebra has more features and benefits than maxi-rib. But the mechanics confuse me.

          • Don't get confused by what mechanics say. You can use any front 2.75x18" tyre TT. In general, rib tyres have better grip off road&last longer due to hard rubber, but in terms of grip, softer ones are the best.
I went with Michelin for my older bike's front.
Go through the websites of Michelin, Dunlop, MRF etc.&look for all options for your bike. Once you have shortlisted, we can talk more.
I would advise changing both at once for best stability.

Thank u Sarvajit for the great advice...
Well, u r rit, thats its better to change both front and rear tyres at the same time to have better vehicular grip... It will definitely have the same stability like a new bike..
Actually i know very well about all these 3 companies and of-course all 3 are great.. But currently i have 2 tyres thats a maxi-rib and zebra-y with me(one fitted and one spare) and both are not damaged. Maxi-rib is in use for 7 years and will get worn off next year and Zebra is in use just for 2.5 years (that too not extensively used). I changed the zebra to Michelin Sirac because i experienced heavy wobbling and skidding in city roads due to inappropriate rear tyre size (Standard rear tyre size is-2.75x18 48p and mine was-2.75x18 42p, which is size of front tyre but used in rear tyre, a cheating mistake done to me by the HH's so called Authorized Service Center near my home).
Since its almost new, i did't want to throw it off and use it for front tyre for 2 to 3 more years (by removing the current Rib).
HH splendor is a economy bike and i want to be some economical, Sarvajit ji. But if my bike was a yamaha FZ or Pulsar 150 like my brother's, then i would definitely go for ur option of buying a new tyre for front also.

My query is simple, Can i use my spare zebra tyre on front for stable and grip ride on splendor OR continue use current rib tyre (as it might not be advisable to use zebra in front).

                Regards,
                Rajiv

                    • Guys have you seen the michelin pilot sporty front tyre of 2.75 x 17....? The tyre is a very soft compound one and luks damn promising and sexy.... It has two deeeeep centre grooves for better water chanelling and cuts on the sides for cornering. I am in love with the tyre. Only problem is its tube type

Using front tyre for rear or rear tyre for front causes problems with stability. The construction of a front tyre is more oval in nature, for better grip, while the rear one is of a flatter design to provide central grip contact patch.
Another thing is the ridge in the centre for water channeling.

Some are using it as tubeless also-do check whether it can be used on your bike too.
I am in love with Michelin tyres too, ever since I got them on my Fiero.

                          • One crazy experieence about tyre wear..

                            Hi...

Here's a crazy experience.. People say that worn tyres have less grip.. But it had been a little bit twisted in my experience.. Over years of riding I've found that the dry grip condition of the tyres of my bike has improved as time has taken its toll on them.. It is noteworthy that the tyres aren't completely bald but close to it(maybe another 6 months left).. I have not been able to test it in the wets.. but the general dry conditions feel is improved..

My question: Is it possible..?? Grip is proportional to contact patch.. In theory, a worn tyre(i.e. bald) should have more grip as contact patch increases; also considering there is a fair amount of rubber left.. This has to be a dry condition case as a tyre with no tread will have less water dissipation capacity.. Can anyone lend me further insight in this matter?? Has anyone else felt it..??
                            CorNer SpeeD BABY...>>>

Similarly, I can swear by the grip of front M45.
Rear is Michelin Sirac Street&I'm not too happy with it.
Anyway the bike is going so I don't bother much.
