  • Karizma Tyres for Delhi to Leh Ladakh and Back

    Hey Everyone,

I am from Bangalore and planning to a do a bike trip to Leh-Ladakh on my Karizma (Not a ZMR).
We are planning to make this dream trip of during July mid - August 1st Week. Around 14 - 15 days.

We were planning to send our bikes from Bangalore to Delhi via train a few days back and then travel by plane to Delhi, pick up our bikes and start touring.

We were planning to reach Leh via Delhi Manali Route. Return is planned to fly back from Srinagar and hence we would bike from Leh - Kargil - Srinagar.

Note: My Karizma is about 5 years old.

I plan to change the tyres - both front and rear. I have gone through the threads in xhbp and got even more confused with a lot of choices...
Please suggest among the below for both front and rear tyres.

Ceat Vertigo 120/80-18 tubeless for the rear
    Michelin M45
    MRF Meteor
    Sirac
    Dunlop Monster

And ofcource I want these bikes to suit me for my local use in Bangalore as well :-)

Please help me choose the best tyres. It would also be helpful if you can suggest me what other parts of the bike I need to replace to get it ready for the trip...

      • Friends last week I had a skid over a turning on my ZMR. I some how feel that they should have provided with a lot better tyres for the price we have paid for the bike. Anyways I'm looking to change my tyres and need your inputs.

[I have read around 200 posts on ZMR tyre options and they confused me lot more. Please excuse me for the repeated question]

        1) I stay in hyd and just wanted to know the best place to change the tyres - HH showroom or a dealer?
        2) What is the best tyre - front and back for city commuting. I might never go for long rides.
        3) Is it better to change both the tyres?
        4) Which are the best replacements for front and back tyres. Basically looking for quick replacements without any mods like cutting the chain covers etc.
        5) My current tyres have run around 750km. So roughly how much can I expect for them?
        6) Will changing the tyres void the warranty? Even if done at HH showroom??
        7) Best place in Hyderabad to replace the tyres?

Awaiting for inputs from you friends. I'm planning to change the tyres this weekend. So your valuable inputs will be very helpful for me.

Changing tyre can be done by any tyre repairer, preferably by those that has machine to change tyres.

          2) What is the best tyre - front and back for city commuting. I might never go for long rides.
You have not defined best. Stock tyres are hard compound, not very grippy, but lasts very long (This for some is best ). The thread pattern disperse water effectly hence decent in rain. Soft compound tyres will wear out fast, but will provide much better grip, at least in dry. Most of them tends to have few thread to disperse water effectively as they are meant to perform well in dry tarmac. There are other thread pattern that are good for offroad, but they will produce more rolling resistance on tarmac. There is always some trade offs. So select the one that suits your requirement.

          3) Is it better to change both the tyres?
          Yes.

          4) Which are the best replacements for front and back tyres. Basically looking for quick replacements without any mods like cutting the chain covers etc.
If changing to same size, no mods or cutting required, this is true upto 110 for rear without modification. I am ready to do modification, but Zma/Zmr has skinny rims, so opting for bigger tyres is very limited. 110 rear should be max and 100 front (if want to go for bigger tyres). I have not changed to bigger tyres for the sole reason that rims are too skinny. First trying to get bigger rims, cause I want 120 at rear and 100 on front. Still searching for rims. I know I can force a 120 in stock rims, but thats stupid according to me.

For me its the lack of rims and not tyres, I can pick tyres from Pirelli, Michelin or MRF

          5) My current tyres have run around 750km. So roughly how much can I expect for them?
Mine has done 21.5k on stock (Zapper FS/Zapper y, F/R). Still very good condition. My bike is Zma-R. Will last another 10k easily. Seems you won't wait that long .

          6) Will changing the tyres void the warranty? Even if done at HH showroom??

Do it at any good local mechanics, also keep your eyes on the rims while changing,Improper handling of rims will cause scratches on rims.

                  2) What is the best tyre - front and back for city commuting. I might never go for long rides.
For rear you have Michelin M45,Zapper Q,Pirelli Sport Demon and for Front you can check out Zapper FS and M45. I suggest you to Get Michelin M45 4.0 * 18 on rear and 3.0 * 18 on front,But as u had already said that u don't want to cut chain case go for Zapper Q 100/90-18 for rear. M45 4.0 * 18 needs a little cut on the chain guard.

                  3) Is it better to change both the tyres?
Yes,Change both of them at same time.
