Re: Royal Enfield 650 Twin Engine Unveiled. Prices out too!
After nearly 40 days of launch, I finally got to see the bikes in person day before yesterday.
There was a launch event executed by Royal Enfield company store Coimbatore.
It was decent, there was a huge crowd. The bikes were unveiled by 6.30 PM after a short introduction speech by the employee's everyone were friendly and patient with each other. The customers were allowed took a turn to sit and get a feel on the bike and also Sadly allowed to rev bikes mercilessly.
So, here are some of the things I noticed.
Exhaust:
The exhaust note was interesting. The raspy and deep burble really felt decent and smooth. I felt that it is something you can live with on the highway day in and day out. It's not as iconic as the traditional thump and it's quite low on decibels on the lower revs anyone who loves a good exhaust would definitely slap on a good exhaust system as soon as it's available.
Fit and finish:
Owning a Desert Strom for the past 2.5 years made me realize fit and finish wasn't Royal Enfield's strong point but I was curious as I head praises about the twins and now I can happily say the fit and finish was leaps and bounds ahead of what RE use to have back in the day, although not in the league of Japanese or Europeans the twins really felt like a solid product and hold their own.
The rear handle is welded on the seat frame is an eyesore the only odd thing which really stood out for me on the whole bike.
I searched for rust, bad finishing in the exhaust and body panels and found none thankfully. there wasn't any shakes, loose or rattles it felt tight and well put together. Considering there aren't many vibrations (which I'll come to in a minute) I hope there won't be issues with them rattling during the long haul.
Paint quality:
The paint quality was really good. Just by running my fingers on the tank It felt like there was multilayer denser coating of paint whereas my DS feels like it was coated with a layer of some cheap wall putty.
Switchgear:
The switchgear wasn't really something I found very different than my old DS it just felt clicky witch is probably because it's new but it did feel that it was made of a denser plastic (maybe my mind is playing tricks I dunno man. :-D ) Unlike my DS's hollow switchgear.
Wire management:
The wire management was decent I couldn't see many behind the headlight frame everything was tucked in neatly the wires on the handlebar was also tucked and strapped cleanly too.
Seat:
The seat felt adequately sized length and width wise. The padding felt soft so it will be a problem on longer rides. I did also check out the touring seat, it felt much better designed with the crease to contain the rider's bottom.
Ergonomics:
I'm 5.7 and I had no trouble getting my foot down the handlebar fell to my reach naturally I did feel that the handlebar is a bit wide so filtering would be a bit difficult.
One thing I didn't like was the foot pegs. They aren't well designed. They are positioned directly under the engine case and since the engine protrudes a fair bit it hinders your foot when you try to get it down naturally to balance the bike. There will be a learning curve to this.
The foot pegs on the GT although rear set felt much more user-friendly.
Engine:
Although I haven't test driven it yet. here I'll just talk about the vibrations, heat, ergos.
Vibration? What vibration?
Almost everyone revved the nuts off the damn thing. I really felt really bad for the bikes.
but the good news is, I could say with the first-hand experience even at its redline the bike has minimal vibrations. It's unbelievable! if someone did a blind test they would never believe that this is a Royal Enfield made the engine that's how smooth it is. It also passed the (water filled) Chai cup challenge with flying colors.
Heat:
There were two interceptors actually one was inside unregistered(I think it's gonna be sold to some unlucky guy). And an another registered one outside both were revved mercilessly in the name of exhaust sound check and doing a Chai cup (but they had water) challenge test.
Now understand that the registered bike outside was revved by around 20-30 guys for roughly 15-20 minutes it was stationary bike surrounded by traffic too. I had time to finish my complementary snacks and went to check out the ergos of both bikes as the crowd subsided and when I came out they were still going on.
I thought this was a perfect opportunity to check the heat levels I reached out near the engine case and Yes, the bike heated up but it was perfectly bearable.
Unless you know the atrocities were done to it for the past 15-20 min you would not have told that this bike was revved in such a fashion that's how normal it felt. Thanks to the low fuel compression ratio I guess!
Engine Ergonomics:
The engine is wide there's no way around it. The plastic protector provided is flimsy but it does protect your knee from touching the engine so I guess it's a plus.
You do need to adjust your foot as it comes directly under the engine case. You would definitely need to wear shoes and jeans to protect yourself from burning yourself.
Headlights:
Fortunately, I was able to Check this as there was a bike parked outside the showroom. the headlights have a decent throw and spread both in high and low beam its good enough for city use but you'll definitely need better bulbs or an auxiliary light for the highway.
Didn't have my DSLR so couldn't click any pictures sadly.
In conclusion, the overall experience is definitely positive. I'm much more confident about my booking I can't wait for the test drive I've been assigned a slot for Saturday morning 10 AM it's gonna be a 20KM highway ride so I'll update my thoughts soon.Last edited by manimaaran; 12-30-2018, 11:17 PM.

What pissed me off more was the fact that they did not bother to send even a message to invite me for the launch event. Forget that, the guy who answered my call got my number again and told me he will send the invite - but still did not ! Talk about customer engagement. But I understood why they dont bother about customers much, thats simply because there are too many of them who are standing in the que to get their hands on a Royal Enfield these days!
I share most of the observations with you, and since the showroom was overcrowded, I left in about 10 minutes. And yes, people revving the bike were atrociously crazyWhat fun does one get by revving a bike and keeping it at the rev limiter for 5 seconds each time is something I cant seem to understand. I almost felt like pushing one such idiot off the bike. I couldn't stand that for much longer, so I just left... Hoping that the showroom guys would give me a call once my bike arrives..

Originally posted by Auto View PostWell, I was there for the launch event too - as I happened to be at Coimbatore for the long weekend, and I casually called up the dealership to find out if I can get a test ride - to which they replied saying the display bikes are reaching them really soon. WHAT? 40 days after the motorcycles were actually launched in India?? Few days after other dealerships across the countries have started delivering the motorcycles? I was quite shocked.

At least for rest of the REs you could kickstart, but you do not have that option.
